E-Portfolio is the way...

The underlying goal of any portfolio is to showcase information of an individual’s progression and expansion in any field of study. Multimedia collections offer the advantages of hard copy collections in many ways. With the introduction of laptops, tablets, and smart phones portability and accessibility have made digital portfolios the preferred for many contemporary students. I really did not know the advancement and importance of a digital portfolio of both the educational and business field. It is becoming as important as books and of great importance in classroom discussions. Penn State University recognizes academic portfolios as, “the integrated and progressive presentation of evidence, reflection, and assessment of learning and teaching.” E-Portfolios allow students to capture images, videos, documents, or other digital media to share evidence of one’s success and growth.

I’m the AVID counselor in my school, the student’s curriculum included hard copy portfolios when I first started, and the portfolios have transitioned to E-portfolios.  The multimedia based portfolio allows AVID students to evaluate achievement relative to earlier performance, recognize patterns in work, pinpoint areas of improvement, and target areas of challenge for future focus.  The digital age is amongst us, because of this digital portfolios offer an electronic multi-media cloud to save and harness ones work without the worries of losing one’s notebook or paper based assembly of completed scholarly material.

Digital portfolios are one of the best ways for students to interconnect interactively with their peers.  These types of portfolios differ from past hard copy portfolios due to their joint information and proficiency related to their use of technology through the internet. Times of technological eBooks are the way of the future and portfolios fall into this category. The Association of American Publishers reported that in the first quarter of 2012, eBook sales sold generated more sales ($282.3 million) than hardcover sales ($229.6 million).  This trend will continue because of media marketing and new electronic platforms geared for consumers.

With the introduction of House Bill 5 portfolios are becoming an integral tool in goal setting, setting, measuring progress, and modifying career pathways. Ultimately, the portfolio will document growth and aid students in becoming self-directed learners. While researching eportfolio websites I found a free one called Pathbrite (https://pathbrite.com/).  Pathbrite is a cloud-based educational portfolio platform that serves k-12 and higher education scholars. The company stands on the principles of, “showcase all digital evidence of what they have created, achieved and mastered.”  I was in awe of how this web based institution condones the use of their product to educators so that students can comprehensively use their database platform in the classroom for day-to-day coaching and learning.  Our current student population has embraced web based technology; classroom instructors must take advantage of this niche to add interactive collaborative instruction to their daily lessons with hopes of increased engagement and understanding to all type of learners and teachings.
